By December this year there is expected to be 1.4 billion smartphones owned globally. A staggering 44% growth from last year after a 45% progression the year previously. Android and Apple have over an 85-90% stranglehold on the current market.

So the question is to be asked. Can anyone break into the phone market in 2014… And can the nearest competitor, Windows, take on the big two?

The average statistics show that Android has by far the largest share of the phone market, at between 55-65%, Apple ios is in 2nd place with 25-35% and Windows with around 6%. Symbian, Blackberry and others make up the chasing pack.

The market lead Android has may seem huge, but it’s worth noting that it’s lost a lot ground from the beginning of the year. The Google backed operating system was at around 70% of the market share in early 2013- With 81% of all new phones shipped equipped with Android.

The slip in Android’s lead has not been so much mis-management from Google but simply more competition from other providers. iPhone released the 5 range, Windows upgraded phones to Windows 8 and blackberry re-launched itself on the back of BB10.

Android is the OS to beat at the moment. It has captured both ends of the market, offering good a great system for universal use. From the budget end £80 smartphones to the quality brand leaders at the £600 mark, its open source applications are widely used. Android’s hosting across a variety of manufacturers means styles and designs differ vastly allowing the company a far greater range.

So who’s the competition?
